Features within the new space include:
Controlled Environments
Studios, for the most part, will always facilitate better sound by utilizing the expertise of others. We want to create the best environment for experimentation using sound blocking and sound absorption materials. Much of the post-production processes and effects can take care of compression and reverb to create the final mix. Still, many more ways to work with materials and sound and incorporate responsive environments through automation and responsive projects.
The Voice in Various Spaces
From effects in postproduction to acoustically treated studios designed for vocal work, we look to include vocal anatomy, physiology, and phonetics in future pedagogical initiatives. The studio supports coaching and teaching practice and actively undertakes research on voice and instrumentation, voice training and many other aspects of spoken word and pronunciation, including any political aspects regarding the power of voice.
After months of consultation and searching for a venue to host our meetings and events, we found a space downtown at 55 Geneva Street. This shared space (currently under renovations) features a meeting room, control room and live space. The lab has two computer workstations, microphones, near-field monitors, turntables, mixers, and keyboards, allowing the artistic community to record and mix audio in Logic Pro, Reaper and Ableton.
Finally, we are in the process of securing surround sound speakers. We intend to start show-and-tell events, field recording events, sound production lessons for foley, podcast work, and digital and analogue recording early in 2023.
Temporary Acoustic Space Design
At the S.A.I.L. studio, we regard the live facility as a flexible space. Thanks to Wayne Petti, we retrofitted the live space with movable acoustic walls, different sound absorption and reflection treatments to create a dynamic area that can change to suit optimal recording and performance needs.
